I mailed to two fellow domainers and both of them have responded. Whats more exciting is both of them have exchanged the blogroll links with Lazy Domaining and as a matter of fact both these blogs have a higher PR & better alexa ranking compared to Lazy Domaining. This definitely proves “Domainers love fellow domainers” and are most of the times willing to help other fellow domainers even if it takes that extra mile. Please note i choosed these two blogs not because they have a higher standing but because i love both these blogs and i am a regular to these blogs.

I wanted to write this follow up post before i forget. Good i have done it and hope LD readers find it useful.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. People who ask are most probably the ones who are going to get it. Today i mailed a couple of experienced domain name bloggers about exchanging blogroll links.

I am not sure if this will end in a successful link exchange but the fact i approached for blogroll link is something which i feel good about. I usually don’t do this for one reason or the other. The foremost reason is the belief that if Lazy Domaining is a good blog then fellow bloggers will link back without asking for. Till now it has been that way. I get requests from fellow bloggers for link exchange which i happily accept.

Few days back i mailed a fellow blogger whose blog was in a much much better standing with a lot of doubts if i would even get a reply. The reason i mailed is not just for a blogroll link but this blogger inspires me a lot and wanted to check if Lazy Domaining has really matured as a Domain Name Blog. To my surprise the blogger was more than happy to link back to Lazy Domaining. From then I decided i should also do my part by going and reaching out to fellow domainers.

Domainers love fellow domainers and are happy to help whenever possible. My suggestion to fellow domainers is to go and reach out to other domainers if you are in need of something. Most of the times you will get a reply at the least.

One November 1st, 2009 i was reading a blog post by Sahar on Conceptualist.com. That was really an interesting post and hence i said so by commenting on the blog post.

Today i was checking the number of backlinks to Lazy Domaining and was surprised to see it jump by around 500 when i checked last a few days back. Thats quite an increase and hence did some digging on yahoo’s site explorer. Usually i don’t reach out to other bloggers proactively which i need to in near future. So that increase did surprise me.

The increase was because of the comment i made on blog post from Conceptualist.com. Check it out here.

On the home page of Conceptualist.com you can see the “Recent comments” widget which does the trick. Since this widget is on every single page of the website so do the back link for the blog comment. You can also see the similar widget “Recent Comments” on the middle of the right sidebar on Lazy Domaining as well. Btw Lazy Domaining doesn’t moderate comments and hence as far as the comments are not extremely spammy, Lazy Domaining can live with it.

This might not give you permanent links as i guess once this blog comment gets pushed down by other recent comments, the back links might dry up.

Why i wanted to make a noise about this is not to encourage everyone to flood the blogs with spammy comments but to highlight the power of a blog.

As a side note i want to point out that LD has added a Polls section on the top of the middle sidebar. Feel free to “Your Say”.

Here is one browsing tip which i call Smart Browsing. There are a lot of browsing tips which will save a lot of keystrokes for your fingers. This is one i have put to use and i am happy doing it.

I use Firefox browser and it works like a charm. I am sure other browsers will have similar support which you will have to figure out.

The way an average web savvy user goes to a website is as follows. For eg: To go to Google they type google.com and enter. Did you know, i can also type google and then ctrl+enter. Even if we know how many of use it. This means i can save 3 keystrokes by avoiding the tld i.e com.

Some of the similar shortcuts to go to .com, .net & .org are as follows.

google and ctrl+enter = google.com and enter
google and shift+enter = google.net and enter
google and ctrl+shift+enter = google.org and enter

I have been using these shortcuts for quite some time. Today i decided to check what it really saves me. For 2 hours during which i checked i have been keying in around 44 urls i.e 22 per hour. If i have been browsing on average of 8 hours per day that would mean 176 urls per day saving me 176 * 3 = 528 keystrokes a day.

The other easy alternative is to bookmark the sites. Being a super fast keyboard user(or atleast i think so) i feel more confident and happy typing the urls than going by the bookmark route. I just checked my typing speed and it is 65 wpm with 0 mistakes. If you want to check your typing speed, you can check it here.

Link Building is an important piece of the SEO puzzle and Link Consistency is very important during Link Building. Its no brainer Google and most other search engines love webpages which have more back links than ones with less or no back links.

One important thing one should keep in mind while Link Building is Link Consistency. By Link Consistency, i mean you should build links for the same url. Don’t mix your back links with the main domain and sub domains.

For eg: http://lazydomaining.com is the main domain of this blog. http://www.lazydomaining.com is the sub domain. Many people miss this point of Link Consistency.

If i get say 100 back links for http://lazydomaining.com and another 100 back links for http://www.lazydomaining.com, the search engines are going to view it as two urls having 100 back links each. I would rather benefit by having all 200 back links for the main domain i.e http://lazydomaining.com.

Keep in mind having Link Consistency is an important factor in SEO.

What is the best way to Monetize a Domain Name blog?

To answer this we need to go back to the basic question of Why are visitors coming to the Domain Name blog. They are coming to see if they can find some useful information.

The Power of a Domain Name blog or any blog for that matter is in the posts you are writing. I feel this is the best part of the domain name blog that can be monetized. It can be paid posts, product reviews, posts for link building etc as long as it adds value to the visitors in the form of information.

For the same reason i have so far resisted to monetize using Adsense, Affiliate ads in the side bar etc. Again i might be on the wrong foot on this one as i didn’t seriously try to monetize the blog till now.

This is my perspective. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section.

Changing Google Adsense Publisher Id alone won’t work anymore. This used to be the way till sometime back. But now Google has changed the way it works and lets see why changing the publisher id alone won’t display the Google Adsense ads.

You have bought a website or a template which is monetized using Google Adsense Ads. The first step for you is to change the Google Adsense Publisher Id and upload the site making sure the earnings go to your Google Adsense Account. But changing adsense publisher id alone won’t work and your ads won’t get displayed. This is because in addition to the Google Adsense Publisher Id, Google also requires something called google_ad_slot.

Before going further lets take a look at the Google’s new adsense code.

You will notice Google has introduced the google_ad_slot which says what colors, fonts, ads type will be chosen while displaying the Google Adsense Ads. In the Google’s old adsense code these attributes will be there in the code itself as shown below.

So now you can see the way Google Adsense Ads are working. In addition to changing the Google Adsense Publisher Id you will also need to know the google_ad_slot which is a unique number which will be generated by Google when you create the ads inside your Google Adsense account.

The advantage of google_ad_slot is that you don’t have to go and change the adsense codes in each of your website pages for chaning the color, type etc of the ads. You can simply change these things in your Adsense account and the changes will be reflected in all the website pages which are using these adsense codes.

Let us see how to install a WordPress Contact Form Plugin or WP Contact Form Plugin. Refer the post of how to install a wordpress plugin in general to start with.

WP Contact Form Plugin is a very useful plugin to set up a contact page so that visitors can easily send an email through this page.

1. Download the zipped copy of WP Contact Form Plugin and unzip it.

2. Upload the unzipped copy into your /public_html/wp-content/plugins folder using the ftp client. I use FileZilla as my ftp client.

3. Login to the Admin area of your wordpress blog and go to “Plugins” option. There you can see the newly updated “Contact Form 7” plugin. Activate the plugin.

4. Go to “Contact” -> “Edit” which you can find just below the “Settings”. There you can set the target email id through which your visitors should contact you.

5. Now you can make a Contact Form Post, Page or Text Widget. I will explain for the Contact Form Page. Add a new page and copy the code as shown in the below picture

into the page’s content area. Make sure you turn off the comments option for this page. Add a link to this “Contact Page” and you are done.
