One November 1st, 2009 i was reading a blog post by Sahar on Conceptualist.com. That was really an interesting post and hence i said so by commenting on the blog post.

Today i was checking the number of backlinks to Lazy Domaining and was surprised to see it jump by around 500 when i checked last a few days back. Thats quite an increase and hence did some digging on yahoo’s site explorer. Usually i don’t reach out to other bloggers proactively which i need to in near future. So that increase did surprise me.

The increase was because of the comment i made on blog post from Conceptualist.com. Check it out here.

On the home page of Conceptualist.com you can see the “Recent comments” widget which does the trick. Since this widget is on every single page of the website so do the back link for the blog comment. You can also see the similar widget “Recent Comments” on the middle of the right sidebar on Lazy Domaining as well. Btw Lazy Domaining doesn’t moderate comments and hence as far as the comments are not extremely spammy, Lazy Domaining can live with it.

This might not give you permanent links as i guess once this blog comment gets pushed down by other recent comments, the back links might dry up.

Why i wanted to make a noise about this is not to encourage everyone to flood the blogs with spammy comments but to highlight the power of a blog.

As a side note i want to point out that LD has added a Polls section on the top of the middle sidebar. Feel free to “Your Say”.

Happened to me also with my site (HDN.co.il) I guess Sahar Blog is a great place to put comments… :-)

Great post ! Never thought something this simple could be soo powerful in getting so many backlinks .

Hm,thank you very much for this,it means Sahar’s blog has many visitors.Because of these people are not bloggers, but domainers as you and me,they dont care about that. They run the blog like daily journal.

    bookmarked your blog too.good luck

  4. Ravi says:

Leaving comments on blogs surely increase traffic. Informative post.

  5. Francois says:

None of these links count for search popularity because comment links have the tag rel=’external nofollow’.
As a proof simply check with Google, you have zero link back from this blog.
Now I want to outline it’s not Conceptualist.com is an exception, at the inverse, aue to absuses there are many years most blogs use this tag and no longer pass any link popularity.

The only you gain posting a comment (except rare clicks in your name) is you showing your interest for the blogger’s post and maybe initiate an interesting conversation, and finally it’s the aim!

I was going to say the same thing as Francois. They are only good for speaking your mind, not building your pagerank. All WordPress comments are no follow. I still think it’s great to leave comments because the writers love to hear from people. Their opinions and thoughts go a long way to helping them decide what people want to read and hear about

  7. Mywebsearches says:

A link is link – the backlink are still useful with yahoo, msn, or bing, google will also will also give you higher rankings. In my opinion no-follow backink are understimated greatly by most of us.

Thanks for bookmarking. Please note you can also “Subscribe via Email”(check the bottom part of the middle sidebar) so that you can read the blog post in your mail box.

    @Francois & Shane
Let me clarify. No where in the post i said the blog comment is helping with SEO or helping with PR. In fact for the same reason, i didn’t even tag the post with SEO tag. In my opinion you cannot generalize to make a statement on whether it helps or not as each Search Engine is a different one. I really wanted to “highlight the power of a blog” through the post. Regarding “Why you should comment on blogs”, i guess it deserves a full post which can be expected soon. Thanks for your comments which is very much appreciated.

    @Shane
“All WordPress comments are no follow” – Not strictly. By default this is true. But you can also turn off the “no follow” flag which i am seriously thinking about, to do in Lazy Domaining. I would be happy to give some link juice for LD readers.

Here’s my take.. I think commenting on other blogs are a great way to create links, voice your opinion and create some online relationships with colleagues. The one thin that bugs me is when blog commenters use their website name as the anchor text. Which is what you did with your “Lazy Domaining” link on Conceptualist.com.

Most comments I get from fellow domainers and others commenting on my blog just leave their name as anchor text and of course a link to their preferred site. IMO leaving your website name as the anchor text on a blog comment just looks shabby… kind of like to only reason you leave the comment is for the link.

    Just my $.02

    Best,

    Mike

“IMO leaving your website name as the anchor text on a blog comment just looks shabby… kind of like to only reason you leave the comment is for the link”

As per the above logic “leaving the website url is shabby as well”.

I can give you many reasons to justify why leaving a “website name” is better than leaving “your name”. But i am going to write a full post on that and thanks for bringing this point. For argument sake i will give you one reason. Lets consider your comment as an example. As soon as i saw your comment, i was wondering which Mike out of the 10 odd Mike(s) i know about, left the comment. It took me to hover over your name to figure it out. It is easier to relate using “website name” which is unique compared with “human name” which are not so unique.

Btw i do put my name in some cases and website name in some cases while commenting. You can browse through the comments on LD to confirm this.

    Thanks for sharing your view.

Backlinks is one of the best and most effective ways to get high positions in search engines and milk these positions for targeted traffic. But getting quality one way links is a big job.

  12. Muxx says:

This is really crazy because I was just doing research into this myself.

I was checking my backlinks for my blog and I noticed I was reaching nearly 2,700 backlinks but I knew I didn’t comment that many times.

After glancing over and realizing it, it was coming from a couple major sites that used recent comments on their sidebars.

I’m not sure of the whole significance of it although it’s great to see additional backlinks.

I wonder if it’s possible to combine this with dofollow blogs to create a very powerful backlinking technique. Not to be spammy in any way of course and relevant to my niche but it’s very interesting none-the-less!

  13. Thanks for the useful post. Blog commenting can be very effective in building backlinks and SEO if done properly. If done incorrectly, commenting on blogs can hurt you in search engines and that is the opposite of what you want.
